ADDRESS Bergheim / Alsace – France www.marceldeiss.com
Located in Bergheim, in the heart of Alsace, the Domaine was founded by Marcel Deiss at the end of World War Two. Currently, Jean Michel (Marcel’s son) tends to over 27 hectares of Alsatian terroir, divided into 9 municipalities and extending over 20 km’s of hills. The wines are traditional and produced 100% organic and biodynamic in the best traditions of the Alsace, with the concept of terroir at the very core of everything they do. Jean is dedicated to nurturing vines in specific vineyard plots to achieve wines of unique distinction, originality and authenticity that speak through their concentration and complexity. There are four ranges; vins de temps (classic late harvest wines), vins de fruits (varietal wines from a single village or commune), vins de terroirs (field blends designated by terroir and site/soil specificity) and finally the vins nature (natural wines) and though the range may be initially confusing, for those who are willing to learn, Deiss offers the best wine experience from Alsace.
Drinking – each of Jean Michel’s wines has its own unique way of ageing and are as thrilling to drink young or old. When young the razor-like acidity and minerality that characterise his wines shine through with crystal clear fruit. As they age, secondary characteristics appear that take on a bewildering array of flavours and nuances. Stunning stuff and so food friendly.
